This homemade no-cook playdough is quick and easy to make from simple pantry ingredients and is very inexpensive.

Making your own playdough costs a fraction of store-bought versions. It comes together in minutes and can keep children engaged for hours, making it a great low-cost activity.
Because this recipe uses common edible ingredients, it is non-toxic—helpful when little ones explore with taste as well as touch.
The biggest advantage of this method is there’s no stove involved. Stir boiling water into the dry ingredients, knead briefly, and the playdough is ready in minutes.
Playdough is a favourite at our house. It entertains my kids for long periods and has been a reliable activity over the years.
It supports both fine and gross motor development: rolling, cutting, pressing and shaping all build hand strength and coordination.
It’s also ideal for imaginative play. Children can make pretend cakes and pancakes, fry them in a toy pan, or create “worms” by pressing dough through a garlic press.
If you need a hands-free way to keep kids busy while you cook, set them up at the kitchen bench with a chopping board, a kid-safe knife and some playdough so they can practice safe cutting alongside you.
I usually make a full batch and portion it into quarters, keeping the unused portions in an airtight container in the pantry. This helps the dough stay fresh longer.
Playdough left exposed will dry out quickly, so always store it in an airtight container for many hours of repeat play.

Materials
- 1 cup table salt
- 2 cups plain flour
- 2 Tbsp cream of tartar
- 2 cups boiling water
- 2 Tbsp oil
- Food colouring (optional)
Tools
- Mixing bowl
- Mixing spoon
- Small jug
- Kettle or microwave to boil water
Instructions
- Add all dry ingredients to a bowl. In a jug, combine the wet ingredients (boiling water and oil) and any food colouring, then pour into the dry mixture.
- Stir until the dough begins to come together, then turn it out onto a clean surface and knead lightly until smooth. The dough will be hot initially, so handle with care.
- If the dough feels sticky—this can happen depending on the flour or amount of colouring—knead in a little extra flour until you reach a smooth, non-sticky consistency.
Notes
Store playdough in an airtight container between uses to keep it soft and workable for longer.
