How to draw a mushroom — easy!
Follow these six clear steps with the accompanying images. You only need a pencil and paper to begin; add color at the end to finish your piece.
- Draw the stalk. Start with a U-shaped curve for the stem, then connect the bottom with a slightly curved line to form the base.
- Add the underside of the cap. Sketch an oval behind the top of the stem so the cap appears to sit behind the stalk.
- Draw the domed top. Create a curved line that follows the shape of the underside, rising over the stem and returning down the other side to form the cap.
- Add spots. Place six dots on the cap: three full circles along the lower row and three partial circles along the curved top to suggest perspective.
- Draw the gills. Under the cap, draw about fifteen short, straight lines radiating toward the stem to imply the gills. This completes the line drawing portion.
- Color and finish. Choose your colors and shade the cap, stem, and spots. Once shaded, your mushroom drawing is complete — and you can try drawing a second one for variety.

Question: What is the difference between a mushroom and a toadstool?
Both terms refer to fungi, and they share many features:
- They are fungi that reproduce via spores.
- Spores are released from structures beneath the cap (gills, pores, or teeth depending on species).
- They commonly grow in damp environments and on decaying organic matter.
- Many have caps, stalks, and gill-like structures under the cap.
Traditionally, the distinction is informal: “mushroom” often describes edible varieties, while “toadstool” is used for those considered inedible or poisonous. This is not a scientific classification, though—never eat wild mushrooms unless identified by an expert. Leave wild fungi for observation, photography, and artwork unless you are a trained forager.
