Rustic Wedding Series – Part 2, More Reception Decor

Suitcase Card Box

This is a creative twist on a traditional card box. Both suitcases were thrifted at Goodwill after checking regularly until the right pieces appeared. We cut a rectangular slot in each suitcase, attached the halves with velcro so they close securely, and fixed a lace overlay with hot glue for a soft, romantic look. The finished piece offers charm and practical storage for cards.

Wood Burned Initials

We used a wood-burning tool to carve our initials into a slice of tree trunk and placed it near the guest book for a personalized rustic accent. A wood burner can produce lighter or darker marks depending on how long you hold it in one spot, so practice on scrap wood first to get the look you want.

Wooden Pencils

These simple wooden pencils were a favorite detail; guests used them to sign the guest book. They add a rustic, tactile element that fits the theme. Look for small, unpainted wooden pencils in bulk for an authentic and budget-friendly option.

Guest Favor: Seed Paper

As a thank-you for attending, we cut sheets of seed paper into two- or three-inch squares. Seed paper is recyclable paper embedded with flower seeds—guests can plant it and watch flowers grow. It’s an eco-friendly, meaningful favor that complements a rustic wedding aesthetic.

DIY Cupcake Stand

This was a great find with an unexpected origin: a former retail fixture repurposed into a cupcake stand. The top three tiers are adjustable glass pieces, and we added a wooden tier at the bottom for extra height. Repurposing store fixtures or vintage items can yield unique displays and often saves money.

Cupcake Toppers

These toppers are easy to make. I traced and cut bird silhouettes from lightweight cardboard, painted them, and glued each to a toothpick. Simple shapes, consistent colors, and neat edges give a polished, handmade appearance that enhances cupcakes without overwhelming them.
