Olaf’s Frozen Adventure Coming to ABC Behind the Scenes

It is time to return to Arendelle for a festive holiday story filled with music, warmth, and plenty of snow. Disney’s Olaf’s Frozen Adventure first arrived as a featurette shown before Disney Pixar’s Coco, giving fans another chance to spend time with Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Sven, and the people of Arendelle. If you did not get to see it in theaters, the holiday special was also scheduled to air on ABC on Thursday, December 14, making it easy for families to enjoy the adventure together at home.

About Olaf’s Frozen Adventure:

In Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, Olaf, voiced by Josh Gad, joins Sven on a cheerful and heartfelt mission. It is the first holiday season since the gates of Arendelle reopened, and Anna, voiced by Kristen Bell, and Elsa, voiced by Idina Menzel, are excited to host a celebration for the entire kingdom. When the townspeople unexpectedly leave early to enjoy their own family holiday traditions, the sisters realize that they do not have traditions of their own.

Determined to help, Olaf sets out across the kingdom to discover the very best holiday customs and bring them home for Anna and Elsa. His goal is simple but meaningful: to help the sisters create their “first Christmas in forever.” The featurette includes four new original songs and brings back the beloved characters and cast from Disney’s 2013 Oscar®-winning animated feature Frozen, one of the most successful animated films of all time.

One of the most fascinating parts of Olaf’s Frozen Adventure is the artistry behind it. During a behind-the-scenes visit, we were able to see a small glimpse of what goes into creating an animated featurette at Walt Disney Animation Studios. The experience began with a look at beautiful concept art displayed throughout the studio. Each piece showed how the filmmakers explored the world of Arendelle, the characters’ expressions, the costumes, the colors, and the snowy holiday atmosphere before those ideas became part of the final animation.

As a child, I once thought it would be exciting to become an animator. At the time, animation still seemed to be mostly hand-drawn, and I quickly realized that I probably did not have the patience required for such detailed work. Modern animation still takes an incredible amount of skill, but artists today also use advanced tools that help bring complex scenes to life. For a story set in Arendelle, that means a lot of attention has to be given to snow, ice, lighting, and the way those elements interact on screen.

In Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, snow is everywhere. Drawing and animating every snowy surface by hand would be a massive challenge, but digital tools help the artists create the look, movement, and texture of snow more efficiently. These programs do more than simply place snow into a scene. They also help determine how light should bounce off the snow, how sunlight should reflect, and how the environment should feel. The result is a polished and visually rich holiday special that feels magical, detailed, and almost real, even with a talking snowman and a loyal reindeer at the center of the story.

After learning more about the animation process, we had the chance to try drawing Olaf ourselves. Watching a professional animator sketch him was amazing. In just a few seconds, Olaf appeared on the page with the familiar cheerful expression fans know so well.

Of course, that perfect version was drawn by the animator. My own attempt looked a little different, but it was still a fun reminder of how much talent goes into every character we see on screen.

It is safe to say that I made the right decision by not becoming an animator. Still, getting to experience even a small part of the creative process made me appreciate Olaf’s Frozen Adventure even more. The featurette is short, festive, and full of the charm that made Frozen so memorable. It also focuses on a theme many families can relate to during the holidays: the importance of traditions, whether they are passed down, shared with friends, or created for the first time.

Whether you have already seen it and want to enjoy it again, or you missed it when it was shown in theaters, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure is a sweet choice for a family holiday movie night. With familiar characters, new songs, a snowy setting, and Olaf’s signature optimism, it brings a cheerful dose of Disney magic to the season.

Olaf’s Frozen Adventure was scheduled to air on Thursday, December 14 at 8 p.m. on ABC. After the special, Disney Animation’s Emmy Award-winning holiday program Prep & Landing was set to air from 8:30 to 9:00 p.m. EST, making the evening a festive double feature for Disney fans.
