Which calming oils for kids work best?

If you’re new to essential oils, be sure to follow basic safety precautions and dilute oils appropriately when using them with children. For this blend I chose oils that are known to be gentle and soothing for kids. The primary oils used here are:

  • Spikenard – optional if hard to source
  • Frankincense
  • Copaiba
  • Patchouli
  • Lavender
  • Cedarwood

These oils are selected for their calming, grounding qualities without producing strong sedation. If you’re missing spikenard or patchouli, the blend still works well without them. Other gentle options that can complement this mix include chamomile, vetiver, or sweet orange.

Which essential oil brand is best?

Choose a reputable brand that provides 100% pure essential oils and third-party testing for quality. High-quality oils will give the best results; look for transparency about sourcing and testing when you select products.

How to make the “Bye-Bye Overwhelm” calming blend

Below are two easy preparations: a room and linen spray for gentle aromatherapy, and a roller bottle for topical application. Choose the format that suits your family—or make both so you always have a calming option on hand.

Supplies needed

Gather the following:

  • 4 oz glass spray bottle
  • Essential oil rollerball bottle
  • Alcohol-free witch hazel (optional rose-scented for a light floral note)
  • Fractionated coconut oil (carrier oil)
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Frankincense essential oil
  • Cedarwood essential oil
  • Spikenard essential oil (optional)
  • Copaiba essential oil
  • Patchouli essential oil
  • Small funnel (handy for filling bottles)

If you don’t have every oil listed, prioritize lavender, cedarwood, copaiba, and frankincense as the core calming components.

To make a 4 oz spray, add 4–5 drops each of spikenard (optional), frankincense, copaiba, patchouli, lavender, and cedarwood into the empty bottle. For children under 10, reduce each oil to 3 drops. Next add 3 tablespoons of alcohol-free witch hazel, then 1 tablespoon of fractionated coconut oil to help the oils blend. Top off the bottle with water, cap, and gently shake before each use. Spray lightly in the room or on linens as needed to encourage calm.

Calming roller bottle for topical use

A roller bottle is portable and delivers a gently diluted topical application. It’s ideal for carrying in backpacks or purses so kids and adults can apply the blend when they need it.

Add the roller top and funnel, then place 2 drops of each of the six essential oils into a standard roller bottle (spikenard optional) for a total of 12 drops. For younger children (around ages 5–6 and under), use 1 drop of each oil (total 6 drops). Add 1 teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil, then top off with water. Replace the roller top and cap. Apply to wrists, the back of the neck, or the soles of the feet. At home, the feet are a great spot; at school, wrists or the back of the neck are discreet and convenient. If you plan to send a roller to school with a child, consider notifying the teacher or school nurse.

How to use this calming oil blend

When emotions run high, pair the blend with calming practices like deep breathing and gentle reassurance. Use the spray or roller any time you or your child feels overwhelmed. Keep a roller in your bag for on-the-go moments or a spray in the bedroom for bedtime routines. The scent is intended to be subtle—enough to soothe without overpowering.

For diffusing, omit carrier oils and start with two drops of each oil in a diffuser, running it for 20 minutes at a time. Adjust slightly if you prefer a stronger or milder aroma, keeping the scent soft and unobtrusive for children.

FAQs

Why use fractionated coconut oil? Carrier oils dilute essential oils so they’re safe and comfortable on the skin, help with absorption, and reduce the risk of irritation—important when using oils with children.

Can I use other carrier oils? Yes. Jojoba, grapeseed, sweet almond, or light olive oil are suitable alternatives if you prefer them over fractionated coconut oil.

Could I diffuse this blend? Yes. Diffusing is an effective way to share the calming effects throughout a room. Use two drops of each oil, omit carrier oil, and diffuse for short sessions to support a peaceful environment.
